Protection of Animals in Wakefield Society
PAWS is an all-volunteer, animal welfare organization founded in 1982 in Wakefield, MA
We rescue, foster and facilitate cat adoptions and provide animal
welfare programs in Wakefield and the surrounding area.
We staff a humane response voice mail that answers questions, and directs callers to rescuers and other resources for domestic animals and wildlife.
We operate one of the few pet food pantries for cats and dogs in Massachusetts. It's open to anyone in need, not just Wakefield residents.
Thanks to the generosity of our donors in 2025
we were able to help 222 cats in need!

PAWS receives $1K grant from Massachusetts Animal Coalition
Pet Plate program will fund spay and neuter surgeries for cats
MAC’s Pet Plate grant program has raised $3.5 million to assist worthy pet organizations throughout Massachusetts. A fee for these special license plates provides revenue to run the program, and grants are awarded to groups that demonstrate a need for funding spay/neuter services.
Pet portraits to benefit PAWS
It makes the perfect gift for a loving pet parent! Get them a portrait of their favorite four-legged friend and support PAWS at the same time.
PAWS Wakefield is partnering with local artist Linda Jung, who creates beautiful pet portraits, on a special promotion.
For every piece of digital art referred by PAWS, Jung will donate a portion of the proceeds to PAWS Wakefield. DETAILS
Another artist is also offering pet portraits, with a portion of the proceeds going to PAWS. Deana Hutcheson of Newburyport transforms photographs of cats, dogs and other pets into detailed soft pastel pet portraits. She also explores a wide range of media and styles, including abstract art, acrylic painting and digital illustration.
Prices start at $350 for a 9x9 portrait. Turnaround time is 2-4 weeks, slightly longer for custom sizes. DETAILS
